Appraisals/brokerage in all areas of fine Native American Art - historic & contemporary - as well as New Mexico Hispanic Arts & Regional Southwest Fine Art.

As a long-time resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, my professional career and life’s passion have been in the American Indian Art field. For more than twenty years, I have worked actively as a qualified appraiser and consultant for historic and contemporary American Indian Arts, New Mexico Hispanic Arts, Southwest regional fine art including that of living artists, Taos Society of Artists, Santa Fe School and 20th C. American antiques & collectibles. In addition to collection curatorial services, my practice provides professional, comprehensive appraisals for insurance, charitable donation and estate purposes.

Courses of study in the American Indian art field were not offered at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, where I majored in Fine Art. My specialty knowledge in the American Indian art field is self-taught and acquired first-hand through the many years of working with American Indian artists, dealers, traders, gallery owners, museum curators, auctions houses and collectors. Throughout the 1980s, I was Director of the American Indian Arts Department at Dewey Galleries, a nationally prominent gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I am a Member in good standing with the International Society of Appraisers (ISA) having completed and successfully tested in the ISA Core Course Levels of Appraisal Studies: Appraisal Principles and Business Practices 101, Appraisal Ethics, Standards, USPAP, Identification/Authentication, Research and Legal Issues 102, and Appraiser Techniques and Practical Report Writing 103. I completed and successfully tested the ISA Advanced Course 301: Expert Witness. Many intensive specialty seminars including an extensive IRS seminar presented by the Appraiser’s Association of America (AAA) are often attended. I am in full compliance with the current issue of Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), in compliance with all professional re-qualifications required by ISA and am recognized by the IRS as a "qualified appraiser". In addition to the IRS, my expertise is used by appraisers, attorneys, museums, insurance companies and estates.

My interest in American Indian art has extended into the non-profit arena in which I served six years, two of those years as President, on the Board of Directors for the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), the organization that produces the renowned annual Santa Fe Indian Market. Many American Indian arts organizations call upon me and my expertise to judge their annual competitions: Santa Fe Indian Market (SWAIA), Gallup Intertribal Ceremonials, Heard Fair, Navajo Nation Fair, Navajo Show and Hopi Show at the Museum of Northern Arizona, and Santa Fe Spanish Market. The City of Santa Fe, New Mexico has used my expertise for the review of grant applications for arts programs offered by local museums, non-profit and arts organizations. The City of Santa Fe has also used my expertise for reviewing applicants for the Santa Fe Plaza Artist Program.

My Appraisal Services and Fee Schedule:

My fee is $175.00 per hour for all formal written appraisal reports and restricted oral appraisal / consultation services. I often travel outside of New Mexico for on-site appraisals. A proposal for my fee is prepared in advance with a requested retainer and any travel / lodging expenses required in advance. Please contact me for fees related to expert witness services, depositions, and court appearances.

Formal written appraisal reports from clear, in-focus digital photographs, showing multiple close-up angles and any signatures or hallmarks can be accomplished. Photographs should be taken with a good digital camera and the appropriate close-up lens. After careful examination of the photographs, written measurements and condition reports for each item to be appraised, a proposal for my fee will be issued. In order to exercise full due diligence, there are exceptions to conducting written appraisals from photographs: poor photographs, select items such as Classic Period Navajo textiles, New Mexican santos, beadwork and other items, must be examined in person to provide a credible professional opinion of value.

A verbal consultation service, known as a restricted oral appraisal is meant to provide information to the client in order to make a decision regarding options such as resale, equitable distribution, general information or to determine the need for obtaining a formal written appraisal for insurance, charitable donation and other purposes.

Appraisals are not conducted for prehistoric items, lithics, items containing body parts or feathers from endangered/ protected species, and any item that could be considered sacred, funerary or ceremonial as defined by Native American cultures, case law or NAGPRA legislation.

If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will be most happy to assist you.
