The 21-year-old picked up the knock in training yesterday, ahead of England's opening game against Portugal tonight.

He was taken for a scan and the FA have now confirmed Berahino, who scored 20 goals in all competitions last season, will play no further part in the tournament.

And Afobe has been called up to fill the void after being named in the original 28-man squad, which was trimmed down to 23.

England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate said: "I've kept in contact with him (Afobe) in case something like this happened.

"He's always been super positive about being involved and he's excited by it.

"He's had an excellent season with Milton Keynes Dons and Wolves and he deserves the opportunity.

"He knows most of the group already from playing in other age groups so we're looking forward to seeing him."

Afobe has previously represented England at Under-16, 17, 19 and 21 levels.

Berahino will now return to England and have the injury further assessed by Albion's medical staff.

The club's performance director Dr Mark Gillett said: "We are hopeful the injury is not too serious.

"We are grateful to the FA for putting the player's welfare first even though it will, obviously, be disappointing for Saido to miss out on the tournament.

"But now the first phase is to assess fully what the problem is and then we can sort out a programme for his recovery and rehabilitation."

Speaking about Berahino's withdrawal, Southgate added: "It's a great personal disappointment for Saido.

"He's very conscious of it not affecting the team and we're personally disappointed for him.

"He's been with us from the very first game, scored our first goal and has been a huge part of the reason why we're here. t's a great shame he won't be able to finish the job."
