Edgewood College Today

An Increasing Commitment to Recycled Paper A commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability resonates deeply at the College, a legacy begun by the native people who first cared for this very special 55-acre campus on the shore of Lake Wingra. The College is honored to be part of the legacy of sustainability that we inherit. With the publication of this edition, we’re taking additional steps to try to be good stewards of the environment. The symbol above corresponds to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an international, nonprofit, membership-based organization that brings people together to find solutions to the problems created by poor forestry practices and to reward good forest management.

A Search Continues… This academic year is the Year of the Search for Truth. So what does that mean, exactly? In our tradition it means that each of us carries a bit of the truth with us; no one “possesses” it. And the search for truth is one that we do together, discovering (hopefully) more and more as we go. That may mean the ‘search’ can play out in many, many different ways. And of course, as we find ourselves at the start of an election year, that search is perhaps more important (and challenging!) than ever.

For two young alumnae you’ll meet in this issue, the search has fired an entrepreneurial spirit – a response to the “truth” of an uncertain economy that we find ourselves steering through. You can’t have an environmentally responsible taxi service, right? And why on earth would you expand a business that seems to be doing just fine? Is now a good time, given the turmoil of the global economy? The two women you’re about to meet share where they find themselves in their own careers and their own search. Their stories reflect not just the strength of a liberal arts education, but of the fire they carry – one that was fueled by their work and life both in and out of the classroom at Edgewood College. You’ll also read about some great recognition the College has received recently – both locally and nationally. It’s always wonderful to be acknowledged, but what’s most important is the quality of the experience of Edgewood College, and what that experience means for you. Fine, I’ll go out on a limb here: that’s the TRUTH! So please, let us hear from you. Share the story of your own search for truth, and how that’s been shaped by the College, and the people and relationships in your life. When you do, you’re telling future generations how much you love this place where the tradition of study, reflection, and action moves from words on a page to lives of leadership and service. Send us your news at alumni@edgewood.edu, or give us a call at 608.663.2245. It’s great to stay connected to the community of Edgewood College.

ind what is meaningful and rewarding to you. Build and nurture relationships. These are just some of the principles guiding Amanda Schmidt, ’09. Raised in Verona, Schmidt’s search began when she was in her early teens. After learning about the College through members of her extended family and Verona High School’s chief rival, Edgewood High School, Schmidt knew Edgewood College was right for her. “On my first day of my freshman year in high school, my English teacher had us write letters to ourselves that would be mailed to us once we graduated from high school. In that letter, I wrote that I hoped to attend Edgewood College,” she said. “The reason I felt so strongly about Edgewood was the small classes, the community feeling and it was close to home. … I never thought about going anywhere else.”

One class in particular has had a huge impact on her life. While working on a group project for a marketing class, she got to know

winter.11//Edgewood College magazine

Her college years were busy. While earning a bachelor of science in business – marketing and a minor in Spanish, Schmidt was a full-time office worker for Schmidt’s Auto, a company owned by her father and uncle. She said, “I would go to work, unless I had a class. I’d go to class, go back to work, then go to class again!”

classmate Jordan Casto, ‘09. The two turned a semesterlong project into a lifelong commitment when they married this past August. (Casto is a loan officer/ representative with Park Bank.) Schmidt’s studies and the College’s Mission have served her well. Since June 2010, she has been the marketing manager for Green Cab of Madison. It is Madison’s first all hybrid taxi company. Regarding the College’s Mission to educate students for meaningful personal and professional lives of a lifelong search for truth, she said, “In my eyes ‘search for truth’ means to search for something that is meaningful and rewarding to you not only as a person of the community, but also as a business person. …You should find purpose in what you are doing and not just go with whatever is easiest.”

winter.11//Edgewood College magazine

In her role as the company’s marketing manager, “‘Search for truth’ means to me that in everything I

do with Green Cab of Madison, I am trying to build relationships - build relationships with our drivers and staff members and build relationships with our passengers and community. Being able to help people with something so important as transportation and help the company be reliable and provide a service that is ‘green’ is very rewarding,” she said. Schmidt has a long list of things about the company that she finds rewarding, or, more accurately, is passionate about. “I love how our cabs are environmentally friendly,” she said. “Our Prius taxis get about 51 miles to the gallon while other traditional taxis get somewhere in the upper teens. … And, each of our taxis has a bike rack on the back of it to help promote more eco-friendly ways of travel.” She is also proud that the company does not use meters to determine each fare. Instead, customers are charged

based on the number of “zones” in which they travel. That way riders don’t have to worry whether the driver is taking the shortest route or if the taxi gets stuck in traffic. Plus, riders can save money by choosing to share the ride with other passengers. All passengers are told beforehand how much the trip will cost and each taxi is thoroughly cleaned after every shift. As in her college years, Schmidt is busy. In addition to her duties for Green Cab of Madison, she works part time for Schmidt’s Auto, leaving little time to pursue her photography hobby. But, she is taking the number one lesson of Prof. Moses Altsech’s “The Meaning of Life” talk to heart – it’s all about family. “I always remind myself that you can work very hard, but you have to make sure that you spend time with your loved ones.” And, she follows her own bit of advice. … “Be the first one to say ‘hello.’”

hat’s when we started considering that idea – seeing if we could make it work financially, mentally, spiritually.” The year was 2005 when Hathaway Dilba ’99 and her husband Otto were approached by their colleague Dean Coffey about starting a business together. Otto and Dean worked together at the (now closed) Angelic Brewing Company in Madison. “

A native of Los Angeles, Hathaway moved to Madison with her family in 1992. A two-year degree from Madison Area Technical College in apparel marketing, and the completion of her undergraduate degree in Business with concentrations in Management and Marketing from Edgewood College sparked an entrepreneurial spirit that burns bright.

winter.11//Edgewood College magazine

Ale Asylum opened in May 2006, in humble surroundings in a lightindustrial setting on Madison’s east side. Hathaway says the timing was right – there were relatively few micro-breweries even that short time ago. A conservative approach in their business plan focused on getting the right people into the correct roles. “Dean is a worldrenowned brewmaster, Otto has the business acumen, and is a numbercruncher, and does great graphic design. I wear many different hats,” she says. Good timing, the right people, and some critical partnerships got Ale Asylum off to a solid start. “We ended up

completely privately funding the start of this business. We did not go through banks. And what happened was, we made sure we had a good, strong group of fundholders, investors if you will, that helped us along the way to get us to where we are now. We owe a lot of our success – most of our success – to that.” That kind of help is crucial to any venture, but it’s not the only piece of the puzzle for launching and running a business. “The emotional commitment is big,” she says. “I mean you’re putting a second mortgage on your house, plus you’re making a lot of sacrifice. It’s sink or swim, and I think a lot of people sink around Year Two, not seeing the return on investment they wanted, so we knew going into this that we would realize that later down the road.”

winter.11//Edgewood College magazine

That conservative approach and solid footing is, in part, a result of the time and energy spent in and out of the classroom at the College – especially time spent with (retired) Business professor Tom DeBusk. “He was my favorite,” she says, “and I had him every semester, and I really, really enjoyed having him as my professor.”

“We love our employees. They’re our family.” Hathaway says Ale Asylum enjoys very low employees turnover. Here, “the boys” pack product in the brewery. Her mother brought in lunch for everyone later this same day – a Wednesday tradition.

11

Hathaway remembers when she felt like they’d make it – or at least they wouldn’t ‘sink.’

“I was out to dinner with Otto – this was about three years ago - and he turned to me and he said ‘we’re at oh my gosh.’ And he said ‘truth be told we were almost there last year but we pulled back the reins a little bit.’” “The approach at that point is don’t do any pay-outs, don’t get greedy, try to make smart decisions. So we’re lucky we all agree with that. We’re not flying to Ireland for a five-star beer vacation, doing tastings,” she says with a laugh. “We’re all staying put and keeping the nose to the grindstone.” But if it sounds like it’s been an easy journey, it hasn’t. “This is my third business that I’ve started. But what I would say to someone who was (thinking about starting their own business) is, ‘don’t be afraid to try.’

The hardest truth Hathaway’s learned so far is also the most personal. “Know when to quit,” she says. “If it’s not working, don’t struggle through it, don’t beat your head against the wall. Be open to change. Adapt your business. I’ve learned all these lessons hard. And one of the hardest ones – because I’m so damned stubborn, being Irish, is in one of my first businesses, I dragged it out too long. I couldn’t call it quits because I don’t give up for anything. And that hurt me financially – greatly. But for all three times I wasn’t afraid to jump in, and it finally stuck.”

Feature

“In our business plan we actually had a worst-case scenario, a middle-of-the-road, and an ‘oh my gosh we can’t believe this is happening scenario.’ And that was smart for us because we had no idea what we were in for.”

Don’t let fear of failure loom over your head.”

And stuck it has. Ale Asylum plans a new five million dollar brewery near Madison Regional Airport. The plans, now approved by the City of Madison, call for an opening in September 2012 of a 45,000 square foot brewery, with a large tap room, and 2000 sq. ft. outdoor patio. “It’s a big move, from our humble little strip mall – which we love – to ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’” she says. So how does running a business and expanding

feel like they’re the ones that got us here –

which they did!

that business in an uncertain economy connect with an education that seeks a just and compassionate world? For Hathaway the answer is pretty straightforward: focus on the relationships around you. “We love our employees. They’re our family. We have a very low turnover rate, both at the front of the house and in the brewery. We try to treat everyone like equals, and like family. We try to make everyone feel like they’re the ones that got us here – which they did!” And she says all the partners agree that their ‘family’ is a reflection of the wider community. Their part in that community continues to grow. For now, Hathaway sums it up in three words. “Simply said, pay it forward. One of the things we all agreed on is we’ll help out. We can’t write checks right now – we’re not there yet – but we help out with donations for silent auctions, we help out with product donations, we’ve hosted fundraisers here. I think all three of us agree that we count our blessings at the end of the day.” A conservative approach, the right people, a bit of good timing, and a life in perspective have led to a bright future for Hathaway and her colleagues.

winter.11//Edgewood College magazine

“I believe that’s important for all of us. You can’t have your focus just on work all the time because you’re going to lose sight of what’s around you, and the need to be compassionate in this world. People need that support from us as a business – someday we’ll really be able to make a difference in a big way, and we’ll do it – but right now we just do the best we can.”

Current space is tight. The new building is expected to measure 45,000 square feet.

Nursing Faculty Earn National Distinction In Nation’s Capital

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) recently honored a collaborative initiative between Edgewood College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Award for Innovative Clinical Rotation in a Nursing Home. Dr. Colleen Gullickson of Edgewood College and Dr. Barbara Bowers of UW-Madison developed and implemented the Wisconsin Long-Term Care Clinical Scholars Program. The two Wisconsin institutions shared this year’s award with the University of Minnesota. The Wisconsin Long-Term Care Clinical Scholars Program exposes students to positive experiences in long-term care

settings, potentially impacting careers while improving knowledge and experience related to caring for older adults. Focused learning is accomplished through the creation of a clinically intensive 12‐week summer internship for baccalaureate nursing students. The program allows students to obtain focused experience with older adults and long-term care organizations with significant coaching and support in place. According to one of AACN’s reviewers, this program “elevates the care of older adults in the eyes of undergraduates, it helps to make a statement that to care for older adults you have to be the best of the best.”

Yrios Retires Biology Professor John Yrios stepped away from the classroom at the close of the last academic year, retiring from Edgewood College after a career that spanned thirtytwo years. By his own estimate, Professor Yrios taught about 3,800 students at the College. He was also an instrumental woodworker on campus, creating pieces for St. Joseph Chapel – including the altar – hewn from the trees that had to be removed to make way for the Oscar Rennebohm Library. Professor Yrios is not gone, however. He’ll be back at the scorer’s table for another season of Eagles Basketball, serving once again as the scoreboard operator. Congratulations, John!

College Names Two for Mazzuchelli Award Edgewood College has named professor Denis Collins, and Father Pat Norris, O.P., Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish recipients of the 2011 Mazzuchelli Medallion. The two were honored at this year’s Heritage Celebration. Dr. Collins is a prolific writer on the subject of business ethics, and has completed several books on the subject. And while his books are on the topic of business ethics, his deeper contributions are really about leading an ethical life. He has combined his teaching with community service, either through personal involvement or by creating opportunities for students to connect their learning and beliefs to action through engagement in working to improve the world around them. Fr. Pat Norris, O.P. has made life choices that illustrate a commitment to search for truth through his academic interests, his decision to join the Dominican order, his exploration of medical ethics, and his compassionate listening to any and all. In addition to his duties as Pastor, Fr. Norris serves on ethics committees in both the health care industry and government.

The annual Heritage Celebration commemorates the vision of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa in the 1927 establishment of Edgewood College. The awarding of the Samuel Mazzuchelli medallion is held to honor those who cultivate intellectual and spiritual resources to empower others.

Welcome, Fr. Ken! In August, Fr. Ken Klink joined the College Ministries department in a part-time College Chaplain position shared with Fr. Tony Schumacher. Fr. Ken is a Catholic priest of the Madison Catholic diocese. Prior to his arrival at the College, he served as long-time pastor at two near-by Catholic parishes, St. Mary of Lourdes in Belleville, Wisconsin and St. James in Dayton, Wisconsin. During the academic year, he presides at the College community’s Sunday 11:00am celebration of the Eucharist. Welcome, Fr. Ken!

In the past two years, 3,500 veterans have returned to Wisconsin, and many are seeking a post-secondary education. In the past year alone, there has been a 30% increase in the number of veterans returning to college. In response to these needs as well as to requests for specific services from our student veterans, we have created our Heroes’ Welcome Program to enhance our educational services for student veterans and their families. It is designed to foster increased academic success and workforce readiness through comprehensive support systems and individuallyresponsive instructional delivery. Generous support from the Wal-Mart Foundation has made it possible for the College to initiate and pilot services through the Heroes’ Welcome Program in the 2011-2012 academic year.

Transforming Lives

winter.11//Edgewood College magazine

Edgewood College students make an impact on our campus, in the classroom, and in the Dane County community. Those students are connecting learning, beliefs, and actions. Raven Eggson-Washington and Taylor Case are two students who are doing just that. They each come from very different backgrounds. Taylor is from the small Illinois town of Hinckley. Raven is from Milwaukee. But they do have some important things in common. Both are junior Psychology majors, both are serving in paid internships for the United Way of Dane County as ‘loaned executives,’ and both recognize the transformation that’s taking place in their lives. The two share stories of service and of the power of philanthropy, at businesses and organizations throughout Greater Madison. Taylor’s main message, when she speaks to the large gatherings, is despite a challenging economy, community is more important than ever. “There are people who can barely get by, and that’s what I really want to get across,” Taylor says. Her work with United Way this fall is just the next chapter for her. She completed a fundraising internship with the Invisible Children Foundation, based in Chicago, during summer 2011, and says she began tutoring elementary school kids her freshman year. “Within the last year I’ve realized that I’m very blessed, with everything I have, and the opportunities that I’ve been given. I’m healthy, and I’m able. So I really feel that it’s my opportunity to give

back. I really want to go out there full-force and try to help. This experience has made me realize want I want to do – I’m sure I’ll pursue a career in a non-profit, helping with kids.” Both Taylor and Raven completed two and a half weeks of nine-hour-a-day training before embarking on their outreach to Dane County organizations. That training for Raven – who admits a bit of apprehension – was all she needed. “Once you start to hear the personal stories, and you see the impact that people can have on the community, it makes you feel like it’s your duty to go out there and let people know,” she says. “The cause speaks louder than any fear you may have about getting up and speaking. Once you get to that personal story, that personal connection, you just feel obligated to do as much as you possibly can – because there really are people who need this.” It’s a need that Raven has already seen, and a role that allows her to take meaningful action. “For me coming from Milwaukee, it’s not something that’s foreign to me, but to see (the United Way) placing so much emphasis on it, and doing the planning and goal-setting addressing the problems, that was just a breath of fresh air, something that I could really commit myself to.” “Having an effect on people, when I felt like I couldn’t before, that’s where my passion comes from. That’s where I’m able to go to sleep at night and think, ‘I did a good thing today.’”

Edgewood College A n nua l R e p o rt | 2 0 1 0 - 2 0 1 1

A message from the President, Daniel J. Carey We are a College that continues to experience success by meeting the emerging needs of Greater Madison, the state of Wisconsin, and students and families we serve. Continuing a trend of recent years, we once again welcomed an incoming class of about 450 new freshmen and transfer students this fall. Our freshman-tosophomore retention rate is at a record level, after several years of steady growth. This means that more and more students and their families see the value of an Edgewood College education, even in uncertain economic times. Not surprisingly, our students and their families continue to demonstrate higher financial need. In response, the College has increased financial aid in order to keep an Edgewood College education affordable. We continue to see increases in the diversity of our students. Approximately twenty percent of this year’s freshman class selfidentify as students of color. The freshman class was not only more diverse, it had a higher academic profile as well. In addition, year’s class continues a trend of a rising academic profile. At Edgewood College, diversity, excellence, and student success go together. We’re excited by the progress we’ve made reflecting the population of our communities. Of course, the College also serves more than one thousand students who are returning adults or graduate students. We have seen substantial growth in our adult accelerated programs in the past few years. And in January 2012 our first fully online graduate degree programs begin in Accounting, Organizational Development, and Education.

Tuition revenue accounts for the vast majority of revenues at Edgewood College, so our enrollment and retention enrollment figures are critical to our financial health. By this time next year we anticipate our new Visual & Theatre Arts Center will have welcomed students and community alike, strengthening the quality of the learning experience and, ultimately, increasing our enrollment capacity. We’ll continue to identify and develop new programs that both fit our Mission and respond to emerging needs. We will continue to work in partnership with our students, faculty, staff, Trustees and the Greater Madison community to realize our vision, and to affirm and embrace the commitment to our Mission. I know I speak for our entire community of learners when I say “Thank You” for your support for the College. Your referral of quality students and your annual gifts to the College says you believe in the transformation that takes place in our students as they connect learning, beliefs and actions. Thank you for that faith in Edgewood College. During this season of Thanksgiving, we remain thankful for your confidence and for your generosity. May the Good Lord continue to bless you and yours.

Daniel J. Carey

Alexander to be inducted into WSCA Hall of Fame eagle athletics

Alexander has built conference champion and NCAA Tournament contending programs on both the men’s and women’s side of the ball. Most notably, Alexander is one of only five coaches in the history of the NCAA to win both 200 men’s soccer games and 200 women’s soccer games. His combined record of 465-285-53 represents a winning percentage of .612.

Tim Alexander is used to travelling in small circles. He’s the only person to ever be the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Edgewood College, he keeps a small, loyal group of assistant coaches and he doesn’t worry much about who notices the phenomenal success his teams have had for the last two decades. Now Alexander will join another select group of individuals; he’s been named to this year’s class of inductees for the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Since launching the Edgewood College soccer program,

The women’s team has won nine conference titles, including an unprecedented eight consecutive Lake Michigan Conference titles from 1994 to 2001. The Eagle women’s team has reached the NCAA Tournament four times, most recently in 2008. The Eagle men own two conference championships and have played in three NCAA Tournaments. Alexander has been named conference coach of the year 11 times in his career including 1994, 1996 and 1999 when he won for both men’s and women’s soccer in the same season. While Alexander will tell you that records and milestones are a matter of longevity, his players tell a different story. Alexander insists all of his players call him by his first name and those players consider Tim their friend and mentor long after their playing days are over. Many credit Alexander’s familiar style to his long term success. The banquet will take place on Saturday, March 24th at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison.

Women’s Golf Rallies to First NAC Title WEST CHICAGO, Ill. – October 4 was a beautiful autumn day at St. Andrew’s Golf and Country Club, but the Edgewood College women’s golf team could hardly appreciate it. The Eagles were locked in a tense three-way battle for the Northern Athletics Conference title. When the last group finally checked in, Edgewood College had survived to claim their third conference title in history and first in the NAC. Spitzer was the first Eagle to complete her round, turning in a final day score of 80 to ultimately give her a fourth place finish with a score of 256. Her score was six shots better than her Northwestern College counterpart and seven shots better than her Minnesota-Morris playing partner. Amanda Bliske was next with a score of 90, but her 54-hole total of 259 placed her sixth in the tournament. The

first real evidence of an Eagle title came in with Guderyon. She carded an 86 which was four and six shots better than her two playing partners. Mary Moore then brought in her best round of the tournament at 100. Finally, freshman Tori Wuollett arrived with a score of 89, which not only clinched Edgewood College’s title, but gave Wuollett a tournament score of 280 and the title of Northern Athletics Conference Freshman of the Year.

Bliske were named all-Northern Athletics Conference by virtue of their top 10 finish at the NAC Championships. Head Coach Gary Oftedahl was voted Coach of the Year. The title is the third in school history for the women’s golf program, joining the 1997 and 2004 crowns.

The Eagles finished with a 54-hole total of 1,063 strokes, to outpace both Minnesota-Morris at 1,075 and Northwestern College at 1,090. Aurora University finished fourth with a score of 1,138. Besides Woullett, three other Eagles took home individual awards. Spitzer and

First-Time NAC Conference Champions, (L to R) Assistant Coach Katie Connelly, Amanda Bliske, Mary Moore, Jessica Spitzer, Emilee Guderyon, Tori Wuollett, Coach Gary Oftedahl

Student-athletes have turned in another banner-worthy performance in the classroom. A record 120 Eagle athletes were named Northern Athletics Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-2011 academic year, an honor bestowed on student-athletes who achieve a GPA of at least 3.25 for the year. Eleven of our 15 eligible teams had at least of half of the entire squad honored, led by head coach Gary Oftedahl’s women’s golf team; all five members earned the honor. The women’s track and field team, coached by Bethany Brewster, had 14 of 15 students on the list, while the new men’s tennis team, led by Ben Oestreich, had six of their seven members recognized, the highest percentage among all Eagle men’s teams.

Editorial: Edgewood College - Diversity & Excellence

National honors and an incoming class to be proud of. By Neil Heinen, Editorial Director, WISC-TV, Madison Magazine, Channel 3000.com

winter.11//Edgewood College magazine

(The following editorial was broadcast and published in August 2011. It appears with the permission of the publisher.) “Madison’s Edgewood College is having a pretty good week. First the Princeton Review named Edgewood one of the top colleges in the Midwest, then Forbes Magazine honored the college as one of the best in America. All in all heady stuff. But there’s another report out that might be related and that suggests Edgewood has a pretty bright future. The incoming freshman class of some 300 students is an astonishing 20 percent minority young people. How remarkable. This impressive diversity is the result of a focused commitment by Edgewood to recruit kids of color and make them feel welcome. The highly successful Community Scholars program is one key and as a result many of the minority students are from Madison. Community support for scholarships is also critical. And these students are staying in school and graduating. This is walking the walk when it comes to a more diverse student body, and we believe it contributes to the excellence recognized by Princeton and Forbes. President Dan Carey and his team should be proud of their accomplishment.” Photo: Beth Skogen

Since August 1, the College has been named as a “Best in the Midwest” college by Princeton Review, as one of America’s best colleges by Forbes magazine, and named to the ‘Best National Universities’ list by U.S. News & World Report. Of special note is the Forbes recognition. This marks the first time the College has been so honored. The Forbes rankings of 650 schools - the top twenty percent of all undergraduate institutions - are prepared exclusively for Forbes by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, a Washington D.C. think tank founded by Ohio University economist Richard Vedder. The rankings are based on five general categories: post graduate success, student satisfaction, student debt, four year graduation rate and competitive awards, such as student scholarships and fellowships. “It’s great to be recognized this way,” College President Dan Carey said. “But our most meaningful mark of success is - and always will be - our student’s success and experience at the College.”
