About transfer regulations

FIFAs Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players stipulate that players may only be signed during one of two annual registration periods, commonly known as transfer windows.

A notable exception to this rule is that a player whose contract has expired prior to the end of a transfer window can be signed by another club before the opening of the next window as a free agent.

The dates and deadline time of a transfer window are decided by the relevant national association.

In England the summer window is usually 1 July to 31 August, and the mid-season window from 1 to 31 January.

Should the close of the transfer window fall on a weekend or bank holiday the deadline can be extended by a day.

In the Football League player loan transactions can be completed seven days after the close of a transfer window up to 5pm on the fourth Thursday in November in the first half of a season, and up to 5pm on the fourth Thursday in March in the second half of a season.

Transfer windows were introduced in the 2002-03 as part of an agreement with the European Commission.
