Saban: The Making of a Coach Hardcover – August 4, 2015

Instant New York Times Bestseller

“Insidery, detailed, and absorbing. Come for the chapter titled ‘Why Can’t He Be Happy’ and stay for the one called ‘Miami Vice.’” —Sports Illustrated

A defining biography of Nick Saban, the influential and polarizing University of Alabama football coach who not only transformed the college game but might also be the best ever at winning.

As the head coach of the University of Alabama’s football team, Nick Saban is perhaps the most enigmatic man in the sport. Unpredictable in his professional loyalties, uncompromising in his vision, and unyielding in his pursuit of perfection, the highest-paid coach in college football has changed the face of the game. His program-building skills have delivered packed stadiums, rabid fans, hundreds of millions of dollars, legions of detractors, countless NFL draft picks, and a total of four national championships, including three in the last six years. Monte Burke’s
Saban—the first major biography of the man who has come to epitomize the game—presents this towering figure with a never-before-seen human depth.

Though a great deal is known about Saban the coach, not much is known about Saban the man. Little has been written about his early climb through the coaching ranks as an assistant in college and in the NFL, or his head-coaching stints at Michigan State and Louisiana State and his struggles as a pro coach with the Miami Dolphins.

Through unprecedented interviews with more than 250 friends, coworkers, rivals, former players, and others, Burke reveals the defining moments of the coach’s life.
Saban paints a portrait of a complex and compelling man, fundamentally shaped by both his past and the game he loves, in a way that no previous book has.

Review

“Insidery, detailed, and absorbing. Come for the chapter titled ‘Why Can’t He Be Happy’ and stay for the one called ‘Miami Vice.’”
Sports Illustrated

Saban isn’t an authorized biography, but Burke’s array of sources—friends, colleagues, rivals, former players—makes it feel definitive.” New York Times Book Review

“In this well-reported, engrossing tale, Monte Burke has captured the imperfect brilliance of Nick Saban. Read it, and you will emerge with a deeper understanding of the man, his zeal, his achievement, and the costs that have come with it all.”
—Gay Talese

“An eye-opening book. Monte Burke has finally taken us behind the great big curtain and, for the first time, shown us who Nick Saban really is and what makes him tick. I couldn’t put this book down. For all college football fans, this is a must-read.”
—Paul Finebaum, ESPN college football analyst

“Monte Burke has written the most comprehensive portrait yet of football’s most enigmatic coach.
Saban is as close as the average fan will ever get to watching film or riding in a golf cart with the man himself.”
—Warren St. John, author of Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer

“If you are a fan of college football—or sports in general—you must read this book. Monte Burke does a deep dive into the life and career of Nick Saban and surfaces with an honest and compelling portrait of one of the most complex, driven and successful coaches on the planet.”
—Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump and The Crimson Tide: The Official Illustrated History of Alabama Football

“Smart and passionate,
Saban combines the ardor of a fan with the eye of a journalist. Monte Burke has his finger on the pulse of the number one coach and the number one program in college football.”
—Allen Barra, author of The Last Coach: A Life of Paul “Bear” Bryant

“A comprehensive biography . . . Through interviews with more than 250 people in Saban’s inner circle, including players, athletic directors, even golf buddies, Burke reveals the underpinnings of Saban’s success—from his perfectionist father to his obsession with strategy to his West Virginia coal-mining hometown.”
Garden & Gun

“A no-holds-barred glimpse into the quest for perfection that has driven Saban to win four national titles in his nineteen years as a college head coach. . . . Burke has written a winning, definitive portrait of a fascinating character.”
Publishers Weekly

“Burke takes readers into locker rooms, onto the field, and into recruits’ living rooms, as friends, foes, and colleagues shed light on the life of one of today’s most successful college football coaches. . . . Burke wisely focuses on the man rather than the play-by-play, and the result is a genuinely insightful look at a fierce competitor who nevertheless seems to care for his players both on and off the field.”

WOW! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. I try to keep up to date with articles about Alabama football and Coach Saban, and Burke was able to uncover a lot of details that I did not know prior to reading this book. I can understand why Saban is upset about this book because he likes to control his public image and there are multiple instances that can be perceived as non-flattering that he would not have included. However, this, to me, is what made this book so special. It humanized Nick Saban and it provided a well researched chronicle of various decisions and close calls with taking other jobs, his coaching philosophy, what has made him into the person that he is today and details about specific marquee games that he's been involved in that provide more context than just a final score. Burke also highlights the many good things that Saban has done for his players and the university and overall provides a very balanced view on what he has done at various stops along his journey as a coach. You have a chance to see all that makes him tick and hear about him from a variety of different people and is eye opening and a must have addition to any Crimson Tide fan's library as well as anyone who is a rabid college football fan.

One of his former players says in the book that when people approach him, they don't ask him about the championships or specific games, the first question is "what is it like to be around and play for Coach Saban?" This book provides a thorough answer to all those who love him, hate him, or don't understand him. Coach Saban is a transformational figure in the history of college football, and in my view, this biography is the most complete picture of his life and his impact on football and the University of Alabama. Very well written and a great overall book!

THIS is a definitive biography on Nick Saban which covers his life from an early age through the 2014 season. Very insightful and well written with no discernible bias by the author. Saban is a complicated man with an over-riding theme of still trying to prove to his late football coach father, Big Nick, that he can finish 'the process". His leaving so many jobs is an important thing to know the 'whys' of BUT he has done a tremendous job at each university stop in vastly improving the football program into one that the athletes are encouraged to graduate, treated with respect. Did that at Michigan State, LSU, and Alabama - the last with big-time results in making huge improvements overall in the program. One has to respect that. I've read the bios of some coaches who have interested me - Bear Bryant, Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier and have learned a lot. Nick is Spurrier without the sense of humor! I am not an Alabama fan - just a fan of outstanding college coaches.

Monte Burke has written an amazingly well documented and interesting portrait of a current front page coach. His interviews, chronology, attention to detail, focus on both the professional and personal milestones in Saban's life make this a must read, even for those of us who are not avid football fans. The reader is left wondering what comes next, and in awe of a writer who can tell a story without putting his personal perspective or judgment on the main character.

Superb book. Saban came out yesterday declaring he is opposed to unauthorized biographies. For such a polarizing figure, you would never want to read an authorized biography. You are even less likely to get the truth. Burke has done his work on this one. The sheer number of people he has interviewed is a testament to his dedication to the subject. You get the sense that he really wanted to get it right. This is not a shoot from the hip account that is slapped together, but a carefully researched work of investigative journalism. Fans and detractors will both find things to love and hate in this work and that's a good thing. Nobody is perfect, even Saban, and you get a real look at how complicated he is as a person.

This book is going to get some heat, as it has already brought Saban to the press mics. There are already trolling reviews coming up, but I would say get the book and decide for yourself. It is thoroughly enjoyable read.

Thought the author decided to make his own judgement regarding the coach's motivation without giving the reader a chance to form his own opinion. Excellent historical facts but also think that the author, like most people just can't understand that hyper successful people are driven by multiple complex thoughts. Just don't believe that it's ever one or 2 simple beliefs. But, still enjoyed the book and do recommend it.

This is a real book by an author, if each of us wanted a great author to write our life story would ask for. He worked on it for a very long time, talked to hundreds of people to give a full and objective very well written and complete account of an extremely hard working and eminently successful football coach.

Men are late maturers finally making it at 25 years of age so all of the 18 to 24s that coaches work with have some growing up to do.

A brilliant subject, with the author to do him justice. Here is the complete picture. Unbelieveably hard working coach with the same effort being made by his biographer. An outstanding book.

I've only ready part of it but enjoy it so far. Since this is an UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY I would NEVER pay much for it. Getting it for $5.18 with $3.99 of it for S&H made it worth trying. That way some author with an agenda doesn't profit too much on Coach Saban's success. The price for a 2015 book shows how much the Alabama community does not support the book.
